Do you want to be snorkelling in oceans surrounded by plastic or sea creatures? It's up to you!

‘’In what year will there be more plastic than fish in the ocean? 2050, 2150 or 2250?''

In the last couple of years, numerous articles arose to reveal the devastating impact of plastic in our oceans. A great amount of these articles focus on the year when there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish. One of these articles, from One Green Planet, highlights some of the disturbing facts about plastics in our oceans from The New Plastics Economy report. The following facts are shown, which will give an answer to the question raised on the top of this page.

  • 95 percent of plastic packaging (with an annual value of around $80–120 billion) is lost to the economy after its first use.
  • Only 14 percent of plastic packaging is collected for recycling. When additional costs associated with sorting and processing are factored in, only five percent of packaging is retained for subsequent use.
  • Each year, at least 8.8 million ton of plastics leaked into the ocean: the equivalent of dumping the contents of one garbage trucks into the ocean every minute!
  • Unless corrective action is taken, this figure is expected to increase to two trucks per minute by 2030, and four per minute by 2050.
  • The oceans currently hold over 150 million tons of plastic waste.
  • And finally … if the “business-as-usual” scenario is allowed to continue, the oceans will contain one ton of plastic for every three ton of fish by 2025, and MORE plastic than fish by 2050.
We need to take action to fight this problem. The best thing of all of this is, you can contribute too! As mentioned in previous blogposts, you can contribute by stop buying bottled water and take your reusable bottle with you. However, this will not help save the ocean from the plastic that is already contaminating marine creatures and environment. Lets all take it to the next step! The start-up Parley for the Ocean is collaborating with the Soma to create a reusable water bottle with a sleeve made of plastic from the ocean!
